Escaping to the Heart of Tasmania with The Deep by Kyle Perry

Escaping to the Heart of Tasmania with The Deep by Kyle Perry

Last weekend, we set off on a little family getaway, staying at a beautiful nature retreat with high windows overlooking Mt. Roland. I had four books tucked into my bag – a habit when I can’t decide on just one – hoping to match my reading mood to the gorgeous surroundings. Among my options were The Work Wife by Rachael Johns, Tiny Prisoners by Maggie Hartley, Perfect Obsession by Cole Baxter, and The Deep by Kyle Perry.

After arriving, I finally made my choice: The Deep, and it was perfect. It was exactly the story I needed to get lost in while nestled in Tasmania’s landscapes.

Reading The Deep felt almost poetic in such a setting. I read by the open fire, looking out at the rugged beauty of Mt. Roland; I read in bed with that same view filling the windows. I even read from the outdoor spa, with the sun warming my shoulders, the sound of cows and ducks, and the background hum of Tasmanian insects adding to the atmosphere. My husband and daughter were with me, and though my son couldn’t join us this time, it felt like a perfect blend of family time and my own personal escape.

Now, onto the book itself – because wow, I couldn't put it down. The Deep is one of those rare novels that grips you so completely, you barely notice time passing. Kyle Perry captures Tasmania in a way that resonates deeply; you can practically feel the salt in the air, the power of the ocean, and the isolation of small communities, where secrets are buried as deep as the surrounding waters.

At its heart, The Deep dives into family bonds tested by betrayal and heartache. Perry doesn’t shy away from the hard stuff – every character feels real, flawed, and intensely human. The family drama is gripping, adding layers to the suspense, so each twist left me more invested. Perry has crafted a story that mixes suspense with moments of surprising warmth, and it’s that combination that made me feel so connected to these characters.

The suspense was so intense that I finished it in just two days. It left such a strong impression that I’m already lining up his debut novel, The Bluff, because I know he has so much more to offer. Kyle Perry is an author who knows how to pull you into a story and make you feel the highs, lows, and everything in between.

If you’re ever in the mood for a book that immerses you in the rugged beauty of Tasmania, with a plot that keeps you guessing and characters that linger in your mind, The Deep is it. I’m thrilled to see what Perry writes next – and if it’s anything like The Deep, I know I’ll be just as captivated.

Happy reading, and until next time...                        Turn the Page with Becka
